Cartoons, fatwas and bears, oh my!

There is a spectacular piece on slate.com listing the numerous cultural clashes between fundamentalist Muslims and Western society (Danish cartoons, the Pope's comments, Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh's murder, Salmon Rushdie's controversial knighting). It ends with the most recent absurd situation of a teacher in Sudan whose elementary school students named a stuffed animal Mohamed, causing an angry mob to call for the teacher's execution.

Where is the outrage in the rest of the world? Don't these theocracies understand that this kind of xenophobic blindness to the world will only retard their development toward egalitarian societies? Where are the liberal Muslim thinkers standing up and saying publicly that this is not okay?

I don't think that most of these countrys' leaders want to progress towards an egalitarian society
